*I am Not a robot (INAR)* is an interactive installation. The project invites visitors into a velvet-draped space to encounter a Metaverse abandoned fifty years ago. By interacting with a red telephone, they communicate with AI systems that have outlived their purpose, navigating a world of digital decay. The installation recontextualizes modern AI through a lens of retrofuturism and abandonware and explores the digital legacy of our current platforms. Technically, visitor queries are transcribed and passed to AI language models, with responses converted back into speech and accompanied by real-time graphics that react dynamically to the dialogue. The installation spans multiple rooms, allowing several visitors to interact with INAR simultaneously. A human connection within the Metaverse can thus occur, unknowingly linking the rooms together. However, the line between person and program is blurred, as the same technical pipeline (speech-to-text and text-to-speech processing) is applied to human-to-human conversations leaving it to the visitors to recognize one another as humans.
